Penetrating into the reginon of VILLAFRANCA DEL BIERZO, our path leads
us past great extensions of vineyards, typical of the Bierzo countryside. VILLA FRANCA DEL BIERZO, amidst the Cantabrian Mountains and the mountains of Leon and Lugo, is situated in the northwest of Spain. Its vineyards are located in LOWER BIERZO where the dominant variety of grapes is MENCIA wich give its wines the velvety taste so characteristic of the wines of Bierzo; they are young fruity wines wich age well making them worthy of the DENOMINATION OF ORIGIN "BIERZO". Its origins seem to date back to the settlement of Cluny monks who built an Abbey there in the II th century to lodge pilgrims on the way to Santiago de Compostela. In this location lie the wine cellars of the cooperative Comercial Vinicola Villafranquina, hallmark of Bierzo wines. Since its foundation in 1990, when it was acquired by Don Jose Dapena Sanchez, there has been a continuos imporvement of hte equipment as well as the quality of the wines produced each vintage in the wine cellar Since 1995, with the purpose of delegating tasks and due to the increased business activity, the company has been directed by his son Juan Dapena Vilariņo, enologist and grand connoisseur of Bierzo wines; he will continue the company tradition laid down by his father more than forty years ago. Comercial Vinicola Villafranquina elaborates the grapes of more than 400 viticulturist of the area to produce wines of the varieties of Mencia, Doņa Blanca, Jerez, Palomino and Alicante, in quantities superior to 7 millon kilograms of grapes |
